Magnificent sarees, festive garments and elegant shirts: The current group of Samuel students in India has proven its creative talent in these three categories at a fashion show. Organised by the students themselves, four classes designed and tailored fashion creations and presented them to no one less than their family and friends – stage fright included!
The presence of a three-member jury, who took a critical look at all the creations, may have made the students even more nervous. The three winners were very pleased with their awards and prizes: Pushpa (1st place), Meenu (2nd place) and Sufia (3rd place). Neha Tewari, member of the jury and director of the Samuel Foundation in India, is very proud of the designs of her protégés and at the same time convinced that such show goes well beyond fashion. “Events like this one promote the self-confidence of our students and show them that they are on the right track.”
„After the show is before the show”
As the next fashion show is approaching rapidly, more fashion creations need to be developed: Next year, Samuel students will present their designs at a significantly bigger fashion show to a much larger audience. With such an outlook, April’s event was truly a good warm-up exercise.
In India’s capital New Delhi, the Samuel Foundation trains 216 socially disadvantaged young women and men in the fields of Fashion Design and Quality Supervision each year. Thanks to a genuine career prospect they get the chance to lead a life in dignity, beyond poverty and deprivation after graduation.
